About This Spot

Stepping into CJ Cafe Utica Ave feels like uncovering a quiet, unassuming gem tucked deep in the Brooklyn neighborhood’s rhythm. The exterior blends softly with the block’s daily bustle, hinting at its local roots more than at any fuss or flash. Inside, the pace slows just a little, inviting visitors to settle in and let the flavors tell a story of home, heritage, and heartfelt cooking.

The space holds a casual, comfortable energy — a place where the hum of familiar conversations mixes with the warmth of fresh, soulful Caribbean dishes. There’s a distinct sense of community here, as if the restaurant exists as part of acts both big and small: a quick lunch for a local worker, a celebratory meal for those gathering with friends, or a quiet moment for anyone eager to reconnect with the tastes and scents of Jamaica.

CJ Cafe’s kitchen feels alive with tradition and a sprinkle of personal flair. Whether it’s the gentle heat and creaminess of the Rasta Pasta, the deep, rich satisfaction of oxtail paired with tender white rice, or the comforting embrace of jerk chicken with freshly cooked sides—each bite carries echoes of familiar kitchens and shared tables. The menu speaks softly of celebration without needing to shout, offering dishes that feel both like an invitation and a memory revisited.

The drinks, too, carry their own quiet charm. Fresh, vibrant juices, like pineapple with a twist of ginger, bring a refreshing balance to the savory plates, and you get the impression these moments of flavor are crafted for enjoyment, daydreams, and the kind of simple joy found in returning time and again.

While the spot may surprise you by its modest presentation, its heart is unmistakably bold. Here, the lines of locals and community builders frequently form, not just for the food but for the shared feeling that CJ Cafe is a corner of Brooklyn where traditions live on proudly and warmly — a steady pulse of taste and togetherness in an ever-changing city.

You could walk right by the restaurant, there's no lighting outside to distinguish the restaurant from the regular businesses on the block. I could be wrong but there food appears to have a sweet taste as if they added just a bit more sugar than needed. Besides that I didn't enjoy the meal and would go back....

This place brings me back to my days of high school. Food is always on point. The lines always long. My first dish was the oxtail rice and peas and macaroni salad. It's was so delicious. I ordered that a lot. Then I wanted to try something else, so I tried their curry goat with white rice and macaroni salad. It was pretty good. Also tried the fried chicken with rice and peas oxtail gravy and macaroni salad, and it too was delicious. Their food is always on point. One time, I tried their red velvet cake, and it was amazing. Food 10 out of 10. Wait time 8 out of 10. Customer service 9 out of 10.
